HWDSB Welcomes Back Students with Reimagining Wellness
Hamilton, Ontario – September 2, 2021: Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is responding to the challenge of returning to in-person learning during a pandemic with a welcoming, inclusive initiative that involves Reimagining Wellness.
Reimagining Wellness is a series of activities and lessons that address the needs highlighted during the school closures for COVID-19: the need for safety, routine, support, growth, community and more.
The initiative is among the data-informed strategies being used to support student learning and achievement as well as mental health and well-being across HWDSB.
“We see the activities in Reimagining Wellness – with a focus on community, safety, inclusion and belonging – as a way to support students as they return to school and reconnect with peers and staff.” Director of Education Manny Figueiredo said.
A summer writing team of staff drafted the activities that fit into three categories: Community & Team Building, Physical Activation and Social Emotional Skill Development.
“We will move forward, knowing that the pandemic has disproportionately affected those who are currently and historically underserved including students requiring special education supports, those who experience poverty, and those who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, racialized, Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+,” continued Figueiredo.
Within the categories, the weekly themes will cover personal and collective identity, understanding and managing emotions, self-care, collective empowerment and collective action.
