Iftar Celebrations in the HWDSB Community

Throughout April, many HWDSB schools and community groups hosted events to celebrate Iftar, the fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.

See below to read about three events that HWDSB students and staff attended to mark Iftar.

Iftar at Orchard Park Secondary School

On April 5, Orchard Park Secondary School’s Muslim Student Association (MSA) invited HWDSB students, parents, and staff to break fast.

Posters made by Muslim students from across HWDSB were on display so attendees could learn more about cultural practices and traditions including prayer, Ramadan Kareem and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Before dinner, MSA students performed skits about their day-to-day experiences to help guests learn about life as a Muslim student. Orchard Park educator and MSA volunteer Farhanna Khan also shared a presentation on ways to support Muslim students and staff during Ramadan and throughout the whole school year.

Iftar at Westdale Secondary School

On April 5, Westdale Secondary School’s MSA hosted their second annual Iftar dinner with over 130 students in attendance! Before the meal, MSA members shared their collective goal to “enhance the sense of belonging at school and provide a learning opportunity for the Westdale community.”

HWDSB’s Director of Education Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini was in attendance and heard from Muslim students about their culture and what it means to them.

Iftar at Hamilton Mountain Mosque

On April 12, members from HWDSB’s Board of Trustees and Executive Council were invited to Hamilton Mountain Mosque for an Iftar celebration. Attendees were invited to view a breaking of the fast prayer, followed by a meal surrounded by the Hamilton Muslim community.

Thank you to Hamilton Mountain Mosque for inviting the HWDSB community to this lovely celebration.

Thank you to HWDSB staff, students, and community members for hosting fun and educational Iftar celebrations!
