HWDSB Launches French Immersion Application Process

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) French Immersion registration opens October 20, 2017, for parents looking to enrol their child in Grade 1.

HWDSB has introduced a new system-wide application process for entry into French Immersion, which starts in Grade 1. The application is available to all students within Hamilton and offers a guaranteed placement in the program, but not necessarily at their French Immersion in-catchment school.

“We are using a system-wide application process for entry to French Immersion because it allows us to properly plan the placement of students, monitor any accommodation issues, and ensure we have schools that are balanced between English and French enrolment,” said Bill Torrens, Superintendent of Program.

The application deadline is November 30, 2017. Late applications will be accepted, but placement will only be offered at the in-catchment school if space is available. A spot in the program will be offered at another school, but transportation will not be provided.

HWDSB’s French Immersion program is a proven way to acquire excellent French language skills. The program is specifically designed for parents who do not speak French but wish for their children to speak both official languages.

“Since 1975, HWDSB’s French Immersion program has proudly been giving students the opportunity to grow their language skills and expand their possibilities for after graduation,” continued Bill Torrens. “We are excited to provide an opportunity for all interested families to enrol their children in French Immersion.”
