Glendale Recognized as First Language Friendly Secondary School in North America

LFS flag raised at GlendaleOn Tuesday, February 21, students and staff at Glendale Secondary School gathered for the official Language Friendly School flag raising ceremony!

An LFS is a school where all languages spoken by students, parents and staff are welcomed and valued. As the first language friendly secondary school in North America, the flag raising event symbolizes Glendale’s intention to embrace multiculturalism and give space to these languages within the school community.

John C. Holland Awards celebrates excellence in Hamilton’s Black community

Gala award show returns to in-person celebration for 27th rendition at Liuna Station.

The annual gala honouring Black history, leadership and youth achievement in Hamilton celebrated its 27th edition over the weekend.HWDSB Student Winners at John C. Holland Awards

After a few pandemic-stricken years, The Reverend John C. Holland Awards returned to an in-person setting Saturday night with an event at Liuna Station attended by hundreds. Nearly two-dozen scholarships and bursaries were doled out to celebrate youth excellence in Hamilton’s Black community.

Hosted by the Hamilton Black History Council, the awards are named after Rev. John C. Holland, an iconic Hamilton man who was the first Black individual to be named Citizen of the Year in a Canadian community.

FUTURE OF WORK: Orchard Park Secondary School energy program wired for many pursuits

Co-op placement with local employer broadened horizons, student says.

Alexander Campanella says his co-op experience at a Stoney Creek electrical company opened his eyes to the many trades he can pursue after high school.

The 18-year-old Orchard Park Secondary School student says hadn’t considered taking a trade until he was approached by a Grade 9 shop teacher about enrolling in a Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) program.

He says he’d never heard of SHSMs, open to students in grades 11 and 12, but attended an information session, ultimately choosing the one in energy, which led to a co-op placement at Santino Electric Ltd.

Hamilton’s school board archives offer glimpse at 175 years of education history

Educational archives on Hamilton Mountain touted as being the most extensive archival collection of its kind in Canada.

You think you have challenges dealing with the stuff in your attic?

Imagine trying to organize documents, artifacts and memorabilia from more than 175 years of public school history in Hamilton.

The Educational Archives and Heritage Centre of Hamilton-Wentworth on the Mountain is touted as being the most extensive archival collection of its kind in Canada.

And it’s looked after by a retired Hamilton educator named Hal Hillgren, who works as a part-time manager, along with the assistance of more than 20 volunteers.
