This Ontario teacher wants schools to be more open to Muslim student needs — starting with prayer

Farhanna Khan says she doesn’t want her students to experience what she went through

Farhanna Khan has been juggling her work and faith since her days studying at universitOP teacher Farhanna Khany.

She recalls one instance when she was working as a teaching assistant and let her teacher know during class break, she was going to pray.

“She snapped at me in front of everybody, I never forgot it,” said Khan. “She said to me, ‘if you knew that you had to pray, why did you apply for this job?'”

“I started to shake … I just said to her … when it’s my prayer time, I’m going to leave, and I’m gonna pray.”

Ancaster and Westmount students again win trustee spots

Online election drew 14 candidates from seven public board high schools

Ancaster High and Westmount Secondary school students will once again represent their peers at the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board table after winning a hotly contested election for two student trustee positions.

Thomas Lin, Ancaster High’s student council president, and Harry Wang, Westmount’s student council co-president, prevailed over 12 other candidates in an online election conducted in late February by students in grades 7 to 12.

The Eco Ninjas want action.

The group — Westmount Secondary School’s environmental team led by youth climate activist Jordyn Boyer — are leading the charge for young people to take an active role in fighting climate change.

Boyer and a small group gathered at Hamilton City Hall Friday at noon to demand government, at all levels, take action before it is too late.

Westdale sweeps HWDSB girls water polo championships

Once again, the girls from Westdale Secondary School rule the pool.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board held its junior and senior girls water polo championships Wednesday at Jimmy Thompson Pool.

Hamilton’s high school soccer teams are back on the pitch.

The Westmount Wildcats came back from a halftime deficit to earn a 3-1 win over the Guido de Brès Gryphons Wednesday in Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board senior girls play.

Hamilton’s Catholic and public school boards each went home with a win at girls volleyball all-star game.

The city’s Catholic and public school boards each went home with a win at the 10th annual Hamilton high school girls volleyball all-star game at Mohawk College Tuesday.

First, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board took the junior match 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23, 18-25). Mattea Cicerone was named MVP for the Catholic board while Layla Sevor was the public board MVP.
