HWDSB Director of Education Manny Figueiredo Announces Resignation

Hamilton, Ontario – November 8, 2021: Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) Trustees have accepted the resignation of Director of Education and Secretary of the Board, Manny Figueiredo, as of February 28, 2022. Dawn Danko, Chair of the Board, shared this reflection:

“Director Figueiredo has provided tremendous leadership throughout his tenure at HWDSB. His priority has always been the success and well-being of students. With a commitment to teamwork, Manny initiated effective strategies and leadership practices that resulted in positive outcomes.

Over the years, Manny has worked hard to navigate HWDSB through challenging situations and he inspired us to rise to the occasion for our students. We are grateful to him for guiding the Board through the implementation of our strategic directions, which emphasize student learning and achievement, positive culture and well-being, school renewal, effective communication and partnerships.

Trustees wish Manny well in his appointment as President & Chief Executive Officer for the YMCA of Hamilton | Burlington | Brantford, effective March 1, 2022. We are pleased to learn that he accepted a position in Hamilton with a community partner and organization that shares HWDSB’s values.”

Manny Figueiredo became Director of Education at HWDSB on August 1, 2015. He has more than 27 years of education experience, starting as an educational assistant. As a teacher, he taught in the intermediate grades at various elementary schools in the Waterloo region. He was promoted to superintendent in the 2009-10 school year.

“The experience of Director of Education, and working in service of our students and families in Hamilton, has been a tremendous privilege,” said Manny Figueiredo. “Advocating for human rights, while working hard to remove barriers for currently and historically underserved students, has led to personal challenges fulfillment. I am grateful to the staff for supporting our Board as we continue to create a positive culture for students and staff.”

The Board of Trustees intends to begin its search for a new Director of Education in a timely manner.
