Forest of Reading 2016 Celebrations

HWDSB students once again this year had an amazing opportunity to participate in a province-wide literacy program with the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading.

Each school received 10 nominated book titles for each division (Primary-Blue Spruce, Junior-Silver Birch, Intermediate-Red Maple, Secondary-White Pine). After students read and discussed the book, they are able to vote on their favourite. Votes are gathered across Ontario and a winner is announced at the Harbourfront Centre celebration in May.

In partnership with Hamilton Public Library and HWCDSB, over 1,800 HWDSB students attended an author presentation at various branches of the public library.

Even before these amazing presentations, classes could express their thoughts about the books on the Forest of Reading Commons blog. Here are some comments about the books.

“…a fantastic book and definitely worth reading. I was never bored the entire time I was reading it and I don’t usually enjoy reading that much! I think that out of the Red Maple books, this one is one of the best for sure.”

“I loved this book… my favourite so far. It’s such a page turner, I did not want to put it down once I started reading it!”

In May, HWDSB will send a couple secondary school classes to the Harbourfront celebration to hear which book was voted the province-wide favourite.

This year’s guest authors at the library presentations included:

Red Maple nominee Emil Sher (Young Man with Camera),

Silver Birch nominee Jennifer Mook-Sang (Speechless),

Blue Spruce nominee Sangeeta Bhadra (Sam’s Pet Temper)

Blue Spruce nominee Michael Moniz (The Cardinal and the Crow).
