Chair’s Statement on Extension of Mask Requirements

On March 15th, Trustees approved a new motion to require masks for students and staff in all schools through a transition period following March break. This updated motion replaces previous motions relating to masks in schools.

By extending the mask mandate to April 1, Trustees look to align with advice from the Children’s Health Coalition. The Board also strongly encourages the continued use of masks in school beyond April 1st when mask use becomes voluntary.

Dawn Danko, Chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, has shared the following statement:

“The motion passed by Trustees provides a strategic, phased approach that supports students and staff through the next stage of the pandemic, as several COVID-19 safety measures are lifted.

By introducing a two-week transition period, as we implement provincial direction, we aim to mitigate challenges related to increased socialization during the March break, support students needing to request a move to remote learning and support the well-being of all students and staff as we navigate significant changes together.

We understand that families have many questions about mask requirements and plans for lifting restrictions in schools. Families and staff will receive further information this week on expectations and processes.

Throughout the pandemic, Trustees have remained committed to purposeful, measured responses that support the health and safety of our school communities.  We ask our staff, students, families, and community to be respectful, considerate, and kind as we support each other through this next phase of the pandemic.”
