Board of Trustees Write Letters Opposing Alcohol Sales at 7-Eleven

On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), Board Chair Dawn Danko has written two letters to oppose the appeal by 7-Eleven to sell alcohol at its convenience stores, at 415 Melvin Avenue and 622 Upper Wellington Street in Hamilton.

The letters note that HWDSB strongly objects to the sale of alcohol at neighbourhood convenience stores. We support our civic partner, the City of Hamilton, which has officially objected to this application (approved direction here) and will be challenging 7-Eleven at the upcoming LAT hearing on June 16 and 17, 2022.

As captured in research and Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer’s Report on alcohol consumption in Canada (Taylor, 2015; NIAAA, May 2021), alcohol has widespread effects on risky behaviour that can lead to serious, negative consequences including violence, substance abuse, crime, accidents and even death.
