The AGH Presents Dream Space 2.0: Youth Art in the Time of COVID-19

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is proud to present Dream Space 2.0, the third online survey of artwork contributed by Hamilton secondary school art students, and collaboratively built between young Hamilton Artists, their teachers, and the AGH.

Dream Space is often understood as a mysterious landscape that exists beyond the limits of our physical world. In our current state of social limitations, the Dream Space has arguably become a more essential, more frequently visited sphere by all of us.

Take a look at some examples of student artwork below and click here to view the entire Dream Space 2.0 gallery.

Brittany Jackson, Department Head of Arts at Dundas Valley Secondary School and one of the architects of the Dream Space initiative, described the gallery in her own words:

The Dream Space gallery started last year once the pandemic had begun. I wanted to be able to showcase student artwork not only at Dundas Valley, but see what other classes and students had been doing across the board.

Originally, students could submit pieces related to the first theme “Art in the time of COVID”. This year, we are trying to expand and get students to not only create a multitude of work (visual art, photography, animation, mixed media, etc.) but also have students on a curation team who help organize the pieces for the art gallery online.

This team will also be creating next year‘s theme, posters and other promotional material, and overall continue to spread the word on this gallery so it may continue after COVID-19 is behind us. This has been a wonderful way to share student work online, and once again promotes art as an emotional outlet for students through these uncertain times.

The planning team has consisted of various members of the Art Gallery of Hamilton such as Tor Lukasik-Foss, Director, Programs & Education, Sara Dickinson, Senior Manager, Education Outreach, Melissa Bennett, Curator of Contemporary Art, Tobi Bruce, Director, Exhibitions and Collections & Senior Curator, and Tyler Van Holst, Coordinator, Youth Council & Studio.

I’m proud and honoured to be working with the Art Gallery of Hamilton to showcase such beautiful pieces to the public. Currently, we have nine students who will be curating from their respective schools; we’re hoping to expand next year and encourage more students to join the curation team in the fall. Please feel free to look at some of the amazing student work below.
