$100,000 Awarded to over 100 HWDSB Students through ‘Learn and Work Bursary Program’

Over 100 Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Cooperative Education students are about to receive $1,000 thanks to the Learn and Work Bursary Program.

According to the Ministry of Education, the program aims to support, “vulnerable and underserved students who are enrolled in a Cooperative Education program and have financial and other barriers to completing the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).”

HWDSB’s Learning Services team provided referral forms to all Cooperative Education staff, and the response was terrific. They received applications from students from all secondary schools, including students taking Cooperative Education in Semester 1 and Semester 2. Applicants were asked to complete a survey that speaks to how the bursary would impact them, how the cooperative experience will prepare them for the future, and what their experiences will teach them.

102 HWDSB students are set to receive a Learn and Work Bursary for a grand total of $102,000! All of the funds have been allocated to schools and they are currently in the process of distributing them. Recipients should begin to receive their bursaries over the next few weeks.

“We are incredibly appreciative for the funds,” said Kevin Graham, System Principal of Student Success. “We will continue to work together to remove any barriers that may be impacting vulnerable and underserved students as they complete their high school credits, and prepare for life beyond secondary school.”

Cooperative Education provides students with hands-on learning in an area of their choice. These experiential learning opportunities combine theory and practice to help students prepare for their career goals. Some examples of HWDSB Cooperative Education programs include Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), and Experiential System Programs.

Congratulations to all the Cooperative Education students receiving the Learn and Work Bursary! We hope your experiences have been valuable and that this support helps you achieve your goals.
