Update for Families May 2nd

It’s May and there are many things on the go this month and into June. The year is not finished yet!

Our vision at Balaclava, “We aspire to make the world a better place through informed, responsible and compassionate action”, has guided our efforts this year in learning opportunities and opportunities to get involved. This month our Student Council is inviting families to support the Every Child Matters campaign by purchasing a button that was designed by an HWDSB student. The Every Child Matters campaign will raise awareness about survivor experiences and the realities of Canadian Residential Schools, which continue to impact Indigenous families and communities every day.  Please place your orders through School Cash Online (minimum suggested donation $1 per button). Orders will be due by Wednesday, May 4. Proceeds will be donated to Indigenous groups and organizations that support the work of reconciliation specific to Canada’s Indian Residential Schools, Survivors and Survivor’s families that have been impacted.

Throughout our world there are many countries impacted by natural disasters and harm caused by human behaviour. The Red Cross works all over the world often responding to catastrophic events and protecting human life. Your Student Council invites you to purchase packages of sunflower seeds to plant in your gardens this year to support the Red Cross. Cost is $2 a package. These will be available on School Cash beginning next week and at Open House/Fun Fair.

In preparation for the 2022-2023 School Year we are submitting orders for Agendas. Our Primary educators will be using the Agendas to instruct students directly on time management and organization skills and highly recommend they be purchased for children in grades 1-3. These will be available through School Cash Online for $5.00/each. Our Junior and Intermediate divisions will be using electronic means primarily for instructing these skills, however, if your child benefits from using a paper Agenda, they are available to be purchased through School Cash Online. We will only be ordering Agendas based on pre-order quantities. Please submit your order through School Cash Online by May 27th.

Your child’s teacher, along with the Learning Resource team and Administration will soon be working to build classes for the 2022-2023 school year. To do this we use an extensive process to help ensure that classes reflect a balance of ability, interest and social-emotional needs. Please be aware that requests for specific teachers and/or for particular groups of students to remain together are not accepted. However, if as a parent you have some important/new information to share which may impact class placement decisions (i.e., a medical diagnosis, or significant negative peer relationship etc.) please communicate this in writing to Ms. Rizzo at: [email protected] by May 29th.

Open House/Fun Fair is on! We are excited to welcome our community to Balaclava School on May 26th between 4:30-8:00 p.m. We will have a book fair, silent auction, BBQ, and more. Classrooms will be open for families between 6-7 p.m. for students to be able to share some work from their learning with their families.

We continue to accept Kindergarten Registrations, and New to Balaclava School. If you have a child who will attend Balaclava School in 2022-2023, please contact our offices ([email protected]) to Register. Registration information and forms can be found at: https://www.hwdsb.on.ca/find/Once you have entered your address, scroll down and you will see the on-line registration forms.

We have a number of excursions coming up this month. Information will be shared by organizing educators for all participating students.

Finally, Graduation will be held on June 21st at 6:30 p.m. here at Balaclava School, with a reception to follow on site.

Thank you for your continued support!
