September 17th Update for Families

Today marks the end of our first full week learning in person. It has been a great week! It has been wonderful seeing students back in the building.

Thank you to the many families who have already visited the Parent Portal to update/complete required forms (Student Verification, Media Consent, and Emergency Closure Information). If you have not yet done this, please visit the Parent Portal as this is important information for us to have. If you require assistance with the Portal, please message us at: [email protected]

Please continue to report absences and early dismissals through School Messenger, located on the Parent Portal.

There are few things coming up in the next couple weeks to keep an eye on.

First, Monday September 20th is the Federal Election. Balaclava is NOT a polling site this year. Amended voting cards were issued with correct polling station information this week. Elections Canada will also have signage and a staff member to help redirect anyone who may arrive at the school on Monday looking for the polling station. The staff member will remain outside the front doors.

This year we are able to do limited fundraising with protocols in place. We will be participating in Terry Fox runs this year by class cohort either in PE class or through Daily Physical Activity time. Please see details here.Terry Fox Run 2021 (1)

Next week (September 22nd at 6 p.m.) the HWDSB is hosting a virtual parent information session on De-streaming. Further details will be provided through Corporate Communications.

This year marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On September 30th we invite everyone to wear orange to honour the memories of those who were removed from their families and stripped of their culture in Residential Schools. We know now, that many children never came home from these schools. https://www.orangeshirtday.org/

Finally, every school in Ontario is required to have a School Council to work collaboratively with the Principal to improve student achievement and to enhance accountability. Parents and caregivers of Balaclava students are able to participate in our School Council if they choose. We will be sending out information to all families with details about how to express interest in joining School Council early next week. We thank you in advance for your interest and involvement.

Thank you for your continued support.
