2019 Fall Season in Review: Senior Football & Touch Football

Looking back on 2019 as the year nears an end. Enjoy the highlights that we continue to feature this week.

Football (Senior): Westmount Strikes Gold at Provincial Bowl Game

The Westmount Wildcats were at the top of their game in 2019, defending their HWIAC championship and then taking home the National Capital Bowl game in the OFSAA Football Bowl Series rolling past Ottawa’s Ashbury College 44-6 on November 28, 2019.

Westmount put together a perfect 4-0 regular season earning first place in the gold division. They then edged Dundas Valley a 21-14 in the quarterfinals followed by a 27-7 win over Saltfleet in the semifinals to set up a battle of the undefeated against Sir Winston Churchill (5-0) in the championship game.

The HWIAC championship (On Nov. 7) was a battle of heavy weights with Westmount meeting Churchill at Waterdown District High School’s brand new artificial turf field under the lights with the snow falling at points in the game. The Wildcats held a 24-10 lead late in the game, but a late Bulldog touchdown and an onside kick set up a a dramatic final drive. Ultimately, Westmount was able to fend off Churchill taking the game 24-17 and earning their second straight HWIAC city football championship title.

That win, punched a ticket into the OFSAA Football Bowl Series hosted at McMaster with SOSSA holding two entries into the event.

Westmount is now the second Hamilton public school to have claimed an OFSAA bowl title since the event started in 2000. Westdale won the Northern Bowl 26-17 in 2015, and Hamilton public is now 2-2 in the bowl series. Waterdown and Sir Allan MacNab made the other two appearances.

Also of note, the second annual HWDSB Dennis Griffin Football All-Star game was contested at Waterdown on November 21, 2019. The event saw the top 80 student-athletes from public football teams in hamilton participate in front of fans and university scouts.

Touch Football (Girls): Ancaster Rolls to Third Title

The Ancaster Royals captured their third straight HWIAC girls touch football title topping Dundas Valley 14-0 in the championship game on September 27, 2019 at Mohawk Sports Park.

The Royals earned their way to the championship by not surrendering a single point in pool play finishing the round robin with a perfect 4-0 record. That set up a semifinal matchup against Waterdown who were able to break down the Ancaster defence putting up 13 points in the game. That wouldn’t be enough as the Royals put up 14 points offensively to head to the championship final with a 14-13 win.

Touch Football (Gr 9): Ancaster Rolls to Third Title

Dundas Valley took home the Grade 9 Boys Touch Football championship edging Glendale 7-6 on September 23, 2019 at Mohawk Sports Park.

The Gryphons finished pool play earlier in the day with a 3-1 record and advanced to the championship final on 13-0 win over defending champion Saltfleet setting up a rematch with Glendale who Dundas Valley was able to beat 7-0 in pool play.
