Westdale golden at the girls’ water polo championship

2017-18 Senior Girls Water Polo Champions: Westdale WarriorsHAMILTON (April 12, 2018) – The Westdale Warriors secured both ends of the 2017-18 Girls Water Polo Championship winning the junior and senior titles on Thursday at Hill Park Recreation Centre.

The Warriors collected the school’s 19th senior girls water polo title edging the Ancaster Royals with a thrilling 4-3 victory.

Westdale’s Olivia Koleszar sparked the Warriors to their 19th senior girls water polo championship scoring all four goals including the game-winner which came with two minutes remaining in the game.

After trailing 2-0, Ancaster fought its way back scoring twice in the third period to tie the game. Holly Connor scored twice for the Royals with Saskia Simunovic adding the other in the loss.

In regular season play, Westdale rolled to 8-1-0 record with a loss to Waterdown being their only blemish. Ancaster was the second seed compiling a 7-1-1 record with a loss to Westdale and a tie to Dundas Valley. Ancaster was aiming for their first ever senior title.

Dundas Valley scored a 3-0 win over Orchard Park in the senior bronze medal game. Heidi Lasica scored twice for the Gryphons while Evelyn Brown had another in the win. Andrea Bosco, Stacie Perreault and Maria Pricop split duties in goal for Dundas Valley to hold Orchard Park off the score sheet with a team shutout.

2017-18 Junior Girls Water Polo Champions: Westdale WarriorsIn the junior championship, the No. 1 seeded Westdale Warriors topped the Ancaster Royals 9-5 to defending their championship title from last season. It marks the ninth title for the Warriors in junior girls water polo play.

Sarah August powered the Warriors with five goals including two goals in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Other Westdale scorers included Julia Green, Peyton Marof, Megan Tapajna and Inaya Vallely.

For Ancaster, Abbey Alliston had a hat-trick in the loss with Sophie Lewis and Treah O’Connor scoring one apiece.

The junior bronze medal match saw Waterdown knock off Saltfleet 5-1. Waterdown’s Piper Roberts and Justine Erb scored two goals each while Kiera Reid added a single goal in the winning cause. Danielle Stull was the lone scorer for Saltfleet.
