About the Human Rights Policy

The policy applies to all HWDSB members, which includes students, staff, parents, guardians, caregivers, community partners and service providers.  The policy aims to help everyone at HWDSB understand how the Human Rights Code applies in all HWDSB learning and working environments. It also affirms HWDSB’s commitment for creating environments free from discrimination and harassment. The policy defines:

  • the purpose of the policy
  • the guiding principles
  • intended outcomes
  • responsibilities
  • actions required to implement the policy, and
  • definitions/terminologies

Note: To help with the implementation of the policy, a Human Rights Procedure will be developed.

The Policy is a high level, overarching documents that set direction, guide and focuses on defining HWDSB’s commitment to human rights focusing on the ‘what’ and the “why”.  The procedure is an operational process to implement the policy. The Human rights procedure will focus on the process of implementation, including the complaints process. It outlines the ‘how’, ‘when’ and ‘who’.
