Labour Update for Families (Nov. 13, 2015)

To all Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board families,

Thank you again for your understanding during the provincial job actions affecting our schools. We appreciate your continued support as we begin to slowly return to our regular school routines.

While central job actions have ended for our elementary teachers and caretakers, we are still not back to “business as usual.” Job action continues for one of our employee groups: the Office, Clerical and Technical Unit (OCTU) of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF). This group represents, among other job types, HWDSB school office staff. This means parents may continue to wait longer than usual for entry to our schools. You can find OCTU job sanction details on our Labour Update website.

Elementary Progress Reports

Progress reports will be completed by teachers and sent home on Friday, December 11. If students have not received their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), these will be sent home with Progress Reports. Kindergarten observations will continue but as part of the centrally-negotiated agreement, goal setting forms will not be part of the kindergarten observations.

Elementary Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parent-teacher interviews will only be held if initiated by a teacher. As part of the tentative agreement between Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), Ontario Public School Board Association (OPSBA) and the government, teachers will only conduct interviews related to Progress Reports if they have concerns about a student’s progress. Interviews will take place in the evening on Thursday, November 26 and during the day on Friday, November 27.

As always, parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher with questions or concerns about their child’s progress. Teachers will continue to communicate with parents and guardians about student progress and development.

Stay Updated

Locally, negotiations between Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and our union groups are continuing and we are hopeful that agreements can be reached. HWDSB will continue to keep families informed as our talks continue.

HWDSB posts updates on its Labour Update website and tweets significant developments on Twitter @HWDSB. Also, please subscribe to receive email updates from HWDSB as well as from your school.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we focus on a successful year of student learning.

Sincerely,

Todd White
Chair of the Board

Director of Education
