Your opinion matters! Financial Literacy in the Ontario Curriculum
In November 2009, the Ontario government announced that, starting in September 2011, Ontario students in Grades 4 to 12 will be taught about the use and management of money. The Working Group on Financial Literacy, co-chaired by Leeanna Pendergast, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education and MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, and Tom Hamza, President of the Investor Education Fund, has been convened to gather information and conduct consultations about ways to embed financial literacy in the curriculum.
The working group will clarify the meaning of financial literacy and will make recommendations to the Curriculum Council about the knowledge and skills required to support the development of financial literacy among Ontario students.
Tell us what you think!
What knowledge and skills do Ontario students need in order to become financially literate? The Working Group on Financial Literacy would like to hear your opinion. Please follow this link to complete the online survey. (You will be directed to questions designed specifically for members of the general public, parents, students, teachers, or representatives of education organizations or other sectors.)
By completing the survey, you will be playing an important part in shaping financial literacy education for all Ontario students.
Want to know more about this survey? Answers to frequently asked questions are provided on this page.
The survey will be available until June 16, 2010.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Ontario government committed to financial literacy education?
The government recognizes the importance of providing youth with the knowledge and skills they will need to make economic and financial decisions with confidence and competence. For this reason, the government has started to gather input about what students need to learn in elementary and secondary school to ensure that they are well prepared for the economic opportunities and challenges they will encounter as adults.
Isn’t financial literacy already taught in Ontario schools?
Yes. In the current elementary and secondary curriculum, topics related to financial literacy are addressed in various subjects and disciplines, such as social studies, mathematics, business studies, guidance and career education, and Canadian and world studies. However, the ministry is aiming to enhance students’ financial literacy education by integrating more relevant content throughout the existing curriculum. (There is no plan for new courses or new curriculum expectations.)
What is financial literacy?
Although there are many different definitions of financial literacy, the working group has proposed the following working definition to facilitate the consultation process:
“Financial literacy means having the knowledge, skills and abilities to undertake responsible economic and financial decisions and actions with a requisite level of competence"
How will my answers be used?
Your participation in the online survey is part of the consultation process being conducted by the Working Group on Financial Literacy. The working group will take your responses into account as it prepares its recommendations for the Curriculum Council. This survey is an important opportunity to have your opinion heard and to help Ontario students become financially literate citizens. |

Dear Resident,
RE: Installation of bike lanes and changes to parking on Longwood Road between Main Street West and King Street West
I am writing to inform you about some changes that will be taking place this summer on Longwood Road between Main Street West and King Street West:
1. The City will be installing dedicated bike lanes on both sides of Longwood Road;
2. Parking will be moved to the east side of Longwood Road (the school side) from Marion Avenue to King Street;
3. A “No Parking” regulation will be implemented on the west side of Longwood Road from Marion Avenue to King Street;
4. A “No Stopping” regulation will be implemented on both sides of Longwood Road from Main Street to Marion Avenue.
Bike lanes on Longwood Road were identified in Shifting Gears, the City of Hamilton’s Cycling Master Plan.
Information about the Cycling Master Plan is available at www.hamilton.ca/ShiftingGears.
Click on the link “Chapter 5 – Planned Cycling Master Plan by Ward”. Section 5.1.1 shows the Ward 1 bike lanes. The Longwood bike lane is listed as #59 on the map and in the chart.
Moving parking from the west to the east side of Longwood Road is intended to help improve safety for students travelling to and from Westdale Secondary School. Removing parking from the west side will improve pedestrian sightlines in the vicinity of Marion Avenue and permitting parking on the east side will create a safer drop-off/pick-up zone. These changes were made after consultation with the school’s Principal, School Council and parents after they expressed concerns about student safety.
You are reminded that Longwood Road is a “Through Street” from Aberdeen to King, so no overnight parking is permitted.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at brian.mchattie@hamilton.ca or 905-546-2416.
Yours truly,
Brian McHattie

Smoking on School Property
At the recent Public Health Services/Board Liaison meeting, Hamilton Public Health Services (PHS) emphasized their role in communicating the legislative requirements of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2006) to school Principals and administration through regular school site visits conducted by PHS Tobacco Enforcement Officers (TEOs).
Regularly scheduled annual school site inspections, combined with complaint investigations, are ongoing. Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2006) compliance statistics are reported via the PHS/Board Liaison Committee on an annual basis.
As a result of the routine inspections of local schools it is clear that further public education is needed to increase public awareness about the smoking prohibitions contained and implied in the Act. Specifically, that smoking is prohibited on all school property (both indoor and outdoor) and that the prohibition of smoking is in effect twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The prohibition applies universally to students, faculty, visitors and contractors on school property.
PHS appreciates the obvious barriers the Boards, and more specifically individual schools, face in monitoring and enforcing the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2006) on school property during non-business hours. PHS encourages the Boards and individual schools to be diligent in their efforts to inform and educate their students, faculty, families, visitors and contractors of the legislative requirements that prohibit smoking on school property 24/7 through communication vehicles such as student agendas, newsletters and posters. This is especially relevant in terms of school “sanctioned” or “sponsored” events and activities, such as sporting events, plays, meetings, facility rental and repair/maintenance, etc. that may occur on both indoor and outdoor school property. All groups utilizing Board facilities through rentals need to be reminded of their responsibilities to abide by the Act.
Failure to demonstrate due diligence in educating and informing students, faculty, family, visitors and contractors of the legislative requirements outlined in the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2006) pertaining to smoking prohibitions on school property can and may result in the issuance of warnings and subsequently monetary fines (as stipulated in the Act’s regulations) to individuals, administrators, and school boards. |
