Westdale students Ruby Hye and Morghen Jael were sworn in as Student Trustees for the 2017-18 school year at a Board meeting on Monday, May 15.

Student Trustees represent the voices and interests of all HWDSB students by bringing forward student perspectives and issues. Student Trustees participate in deliberations and decision-making around the Board table, while gaining valuable learning opportunities and experiences.

“HWDSB has made a real commitment to student voice by expanding the role of Student Trustee,” said Jamie Nunn, the Superintendent of Student Achievement Jamie Nunn who oversees Student Voice and Student Senate.

“We are thrilled to have two strong Student Trustees as we continue to enhance the role so that they represent secondary as well as elementary student voices.”

This year, six candidates applied for the positions. After an all-candidates general election assembly involving senior staff, Student Senate and Trustees, student senators selected Hye and Jael as representatives for the 2017-18 academic year.

Hye is a Grade 10 student with a leading voice in student council, having been her grade representative for two years running. She has piloted initiatives such as the school’s Humans of Westdale Project, which gives students a platform share their voice. Hye is a student activist, advocating for the Youth Women’s Advisory Council and working with social groups from McMaster University.

A Grade 11 student, Jael is an avid learner who actively engages in school initiatives by attending Triune and student council meetings. She is the editor and coordinator of Westdale’s monthly school newspaper The Sequitur, which features a wide variety of student writing and art. Jael is in the International Baccalaureate and French Immersion program, and is a member of the school orienteering and cross-country teams.

The term for the new Student Trustees will run from August 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018.
