At Viscount Montgomery School we believe that respect for one another and for school property is the foundation upon which we all grow and develop as informed, productive and responsible citizens. We strive to provide a safe learning environment in which each student has the opportunity to reach his/her potential through creative and challenging programs.

Key to our success is the partnership between home and school. Parent support and input is an integral part of this success. Regular communication through agenda books, phone calls, notes and interviews is essential. The Viscount School Council and Home & School Association are well-established, active and supportive organizations which contribute to our school community and help make Viscount a great school.

Students at Viscount have a lot to appreciate. They benefit from a well-equipped building with excellent facilities, a strong, caring staff and supportive, active parents. A student with a positive attitude and committed work ethic will be successful at our school and will be well prepared to meet the challenges the future has to offer.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education. Help with homework, signing the agenda book, contact with the school regarding pertinent information, etc. are all ways for parents to stay involved.

Parents can also take part in life at school by volunteering to help students and teachers on a regular basis.

Viscount is lucky to have two very active and vibrant parent groups. The School Council meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and the Home and School Association meets the fourth Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. as well.

CODE OF CONDUCT

We emphasize the establishment of a positive and safe learning environment in which each student has the right to an education without disruption and a corresponding responsibility to not deny this right to any other student. Parents and staff share the responsibility as a team in establishing, reinforcing and maintaining adherence to the Viscount Montgomery School Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct is printed separately and at the front of the student agenda book for easy reference.

SAFETY ROUTINES

The Code of Conduct and our Arrival Program/Attendance Check are key componets of our Safety Routines at Viscount. Other routines must be noted as well.

a)  School Security

In the interest of student and staff safety, all entry doors except the front doors and parking lot doors will remain locked for the day. Entry from the playground is marked on the school map.

top

b)  Visitors

All visitors must report to the office and sign in. Volunteers must wear an identifcation badge which is provided at the office.

c)  School Yard Supervision

Staff supervise the school yard during morning, noon and afternoon recesses as well as fifteen minutes before and after regular school hours. During extreme weather conditions, students will be kept indoors for recess. The Student Playground Helper Program has students from grades 5 to 8 helping on the playground at all recesses.

d)  Lunchroom

All students are welcome to stay at school for lunch. Students will eat their lunch in their classroom/advisor room. At the start of each year, parents complete a lunchroom registration form indicating their child’s routine. If a student who normally stays would like to leave school for lunch, a parent note must be sent indicating permission.

top

e)  Peanut and Nut Safety

Viscount Montgomery is a Peanut/Nut Safe School. We request all parents to not sent food products which contain peanut/nuts to school.

top

f)   Emergency School Closure

Parents are required to complete an Emergency School Closing Information Sheet for each of their children attending Viscount. When the school is closed early due to inclement weather, we will follow instructions given by parents on this form. In the case of an emergency evacuation, St. Eugene’s School will be our safe shelter.

top

g)  Oral Medication

f a child requires prescribed oral medication while at school, parents are required to complete an “Authorization of Oral Medication” form. This form must be signed by the doctor who has prescribed the medication.

top

h)  Bicycles

Students are welcome to use bikes to travel to and from school. However, for safety reasons, bikes are to be walked while on school property. Those bringing this equipment do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for any lost or stolen item. Bicycles must be locked at the bike rack. Rollerblades and skateboards are not permitted.

i)School Crossing Guards

The City of Hamilton has assigned Crossing Guards at several locations in our area. These locations are:

1.   Glenholm and King

2.   Parkdale and Central

3.   Betina and Lawrence

4.   Cochrane and Montrose

LOCKERS

Students are assigned lockers for storage of clothing, books, etc. We request students from grades 4 - 8 use a combination lock to secure their locker.

ARRIVAL AND ATTENDANCE CHECK PROGRAM

Each morning and afternoon a student attendance check is taken. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please phone our school secretary or write a note indicating the date(s) and reason for absence (905-544-5670). If you are unable to contact the school during regular office hours, call and leave your message on the voice mail service. If you do not contact us, we mill make every effort to call you at home or workplace to confirm you child’s absence. This can be very time consuming and inefficient, so we really appreciate your efforts in contacting the school first.

Students who arrive late are required to stop by the office and pick up a late slip before reporting to class.

If your child must be dismissed early for an appointment, etc. please contact the school by phone or note and indicate the time of departure. When picking your child up early, report to the office and we will call your child to the office. Students leaving are to be signed out in the book on the office counter.

VISCOUNT STUDENT AGENDA BOOKS

Students in Grade 4 to 8 use a Student Agenda Book on a daily basis. The purpose of the book is to help students stay organized and it is the prime method of communication between the school and parents. Students purchase the book for $6.00 at the start of each year.
