Focus on Youth

HWDSB Summer Literacy Program:

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is proud to offer all students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 the Summer Literacy Program. The program runs July 6, 2009 to August 14, 2009 between 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Cathy Wever School.

The Summer Literacy Program focuses on Literacy providing participants with engaging modeled, shared, guided, and independent reading and writing activities.

HWDSB Leaders In Action Program:

Are you between the ages of 12 and 15? Do you want to give back to your community, earn your 40 volunteer hours, learn new skills, and make new friends? Than our Leaders In Action Program is for you.

Program participants will receive two hours of Leadership Training everyday of the two-week session. Knowledge and skills gained through the Leadership Training will be practiced through volunteering at the Summer Literacy Program. Successful L.I.A’s will graduate on the final day of the session and receive a program certificate and reference letter.

The Leaders In Action Program runs July 6, 2009 to August 14, 2009 between 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Cathy Wever School.

HWDSB Summer Programs of Choice:

HWDSB is the Board of Choice this summer for fast paced, action filled, literacy based sports programs. Join our amazing POC Summer Staff for a week of Literacy Building Basketball or Literacy Skills and Floorball. Polish up your basketball skills or learn the fastest growing sport in North America Floorball, while improving your Literacy Skills at the same time.

About Floorball

Floorball is a fast-paced, exciting, safe and low-cost type of indoor hockey. It resembles floor hockey or ball hockey but is played with light-weight plastic composite sticks and rules that promote safety and skill. Floorball can be played practically anywhere and is ideal for schools, community centres or for hockey teams as off-ice training. Come out and practice your stickhandling, shooting and passing skills. If you love hockey you will love floorball.
