Program Description

SJAM GymAs you will see, SJAM Phys-ed has great things to offer.  Not only do we have a state of the art gym, but there are many new programs that you can take advantage of.

Make sure to learn more about  the new Basketball Academy Program being introduced at  SJAM this year, as well as the numerous focus classes offered such as: Badminton, Fitness and Soccer.

The health and physical education program promotes health active living, and enjoyment and regular enthusiastic participation in physical activity. These course will help students understand how their personal actions and decisions will affect their health, fitness, and well-being. All courses in this curriculum address relevant health issues and provide students with a wide variety of activities that promote fitness, the development of living skills, and personal competence.

Grade 9 Male Courses Offered

PAL1O1 Basketball Academy

This course emphasizes regular participation in the sport of basketball in order to promote lifelong healthy active living. It combines skill drills, half court scrimmages, and full court games to improve basic skills, game play, and endurance. Students will learn basic skills, rules, and basic defensive and offensive strategies. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, communication, and social skills.

PPL1O1M Healthy Active Living

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, and safety and injury prevention. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting. communication, and social skills.

Grade 10 Courses Offered

PAL2O1 Basketball Academy

This course emphasizes regular participation in the sport of Basketball to promote lifelong healthy active living. It is designed to enhance fundamental skills and develop advanced skills.  Students will also learn offensive and defensive strategies, and rules of the game. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.

PAS2O1 Soccer

This course emphasizes regular participation in the sport of Soccer to promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn the fundamental skills and tactics of soccer. Rules, socring, and offensive and defensive strategies will be emphasized. Students will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.

PPL2O1M Healthy Active Living

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.

Grade 11 Courses Offered

PAF3O1M Fitness

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of fitness related activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. This course is designed to teach basic level weight training principles, basic anatomy, and diet and nutrition. All components are designed to enhance muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

PAI3O1M Badminton

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle through participation in the sport of Badminton. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills and will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

PAD3O1M Soccer

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle through participation in the sport of Soccer. This course emphasizes advanced soccer skills, drills, and matches. Emphasis will be placed on game play, strategy development, and cardiovascular development. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

PAL3O1C Volleyball

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle through participation in the sport of Volleyball. This course is designed for fundamental skills refinement and advanced skill learning. Students will also learn offensive and defensive strategies, rules, and officiating. Students will also study the components of  healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

PPL3O1M Healthy Active Living

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills and will be given opportunities to practice goal setting , decision-making, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

Grade 12 Courses Offered

PAF4O1 Fitness

This course focuses on the development of a personalized approach to healthy to healthy active living through participation in a variety of fitness related activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. This course combines weight training and general conditioning. It is a vigorous program that combines work of muscular strength and endurance. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision-making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhance their mental health and relationships with others.

PAL4O1M Basketball

Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision making, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhance their mental health and their relationships with others.

PLF4C1 Recreation & Fitness Leadership

This course focuses on the development of leadership and coordination skills related to recreational activities. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to plan, organize, and implement recreational events. They will also learn how to promote the value of physical fitness, personal well-being, and personal safety to others through mentoring. This course will prepare students for college programs in recreational, leisure, and fitness leadership.

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote life long healthy active living. they will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality, injury prevention and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Grade 10 Courses

PPL2O1F Grade 10 Girls Open

This course emphasizes the importance of physical activity in which students are challenged to be vigorously active on a regular basis. They will be provided with the knowledge and opportunity to solve problems, make decisions and develop strategies related to healthy growth and sexuality, substance use and abuse and healthy eating.

PAL2O1 Basketball Academy

This course emphasizes regular participation in the sport of basketball to promote lifelong healthy active living. It is designed to enhance both fundamental and advanced skills. students will learn offensive and defensive strategies as well as rules of the game. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse and use of informed decision making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.

PAR2O1F Dance

This course requires students to develop their dance skills and learn the basis for communicating through movement. Student learning includes creating dances, safety principles, the historical development of dance and an appreciation of dance through performances.

Grade 11 Courses

PPL3O1F Grade 11 Girls Open

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students interest throughout their lives. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

PAL3O1F Soccer

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle through participation in the sport of soccer. This course emphasizes advanced soccer skill, drills, and game play. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

PAI3O1F Badminton

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle through participation in the sport of badminton. This course is comprised of weight training, yoga, Pilates and circuit training techniques etc. in order to promote personal fitness and conditioning. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health and personal safety.

Grade 12 Courses

PPL4O1F Grade 12 Girls Open

This course focuses on the development of a personalized approach to healthy active living through participation in a variety of sports and recreational activities. Students will be given opportunities to refine their decision making, conflict-resolution and interpersonal skills with a view to enhancing their mental and their relationships with others.

PLF4C1 Recreation and Fitness Leadership

PSE4U Exercise Science

This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the history of physical activity and sport, and the factors that influence an individuals participation in physical activity. The course prepares students for university programs in health care, phys-ed, kinesiology, recreation and sports administration.
