School Device Procedures

At SWO we are continuously working with our community to enable students to be innovative, creative and responsible citizens in the digital and physical world. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare us for a society full of technology. A digital citizen is one who knows what is right and wrong, exhibits intelligent technological behaviour and makes good choices when using technology. Each SWO classroom is provisioned with technology and our school has wireless access. Our learning spaces blend face-to-face, pencil to paper and online learning in many ways each and every day. When technology is integrated as a learning tool, students are able to connect, collaborate, create, code and publish in innovative ways that are engaging and real-world.

This week the revised School Device Procedures (SDP) were presented to students from grades 5 – 8. The SDP Presentation at the assembly highlighted the key procedures that are expected across the school. Teachers implement the school wide-device procedures in their classrooms.

School Device Procedures

1. Devices are to be used for instructional purposes only from 9:10 am to 3:30 pm.
*Teacher signals when devices may be used during class.
*“Screens down” means put the device face down.
2. Recording (videos, pictures) of anyone without permission will result in progressive discipline.
3. Devices are not to be used during nutrition breaks.
4. No device use at lockers or when walking in the hallways. No accessing devices while traveling from class, including earbuds.
5. No devices in the bathrooms or change rooms at any time.

We all have a responsibility as parents, students, and staff to model and collaborate on safe and best practices that support students with the tools and skills to make good choices online. We thank the parents, students and staff for their support in providing opportunities for students to grow as online learners.

*Grade 5 to 8 students will be sent home with a letter today.
