Technology as a Learning Tool

At SWO we look forward to working with our community to enable students to be innovative, creative and responsible citizens in the digital and physical world.

HWDSB’s Transforming Learning Everywhere (TLE) vision is to create a culture of engaged students and staff by focusing on instructional practices in classrooms, accelerated by digital tools. The goal is to improve problem solving, critical literacy, higher-order thinking, as well as knowledge and skills required to be an active and responsible community member in the 21st century.

SWO has been moving in this direction for a number of years with:image-for-blog

  • iPads Kits
  • Laptops

This year we have focused on:

  • Reducing paper use for environmental and financial reasons
  • Opening up the opportunity for students to Bring Your Own Device

By the end of the year, we expect to see:

  • A reduction in copier use
  • More collaboration

Technology as a Learning Tool
Each SWO classroom is provisioned with technology and our school has wireless access.  Our learning spaces blend face-to-face, pencil to paper and online learning in many ways each and every day.  When technology is integrated as a learning tool, students are able to connect, collaborate, create, code and publish in innovative ways that are engaging and real-world.

Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare us for a society full of technology. A digital citizen is one who knows what is right and wrong, exhibits intelligent technology behaviour and makes good choices when using technology.

Parents, students, and staff modelling and collaborating on safe and best practices can support students with the tools and skills to make good choices online.  More information on teaching and learning and the roles of parents, educators and advocates can be found on the HWDSB Resources Page .

What does Bring Your Own Device mean at SWO?
Grade 4 – 8 students with parent / caregiver permission may choose to bring devices to school to support their learning.  This is not an expectation as devices can and will be provisioned for learning.

Expectations for in-school use of devices

  • Texts or phone calls are not permitted during instructional time.
  • Devices are not permitted in the lunchroom, changeroom or washrooms.
  • Parents are only to text or call before school, during nutrition break or after school.
  • Device access is not permitted while travelling in the halls.
  • No earbuds in when walking in the hallways.

In order to support and secure these valuable tools, students are permitted to access their lockers before and after PE, DPA or fitness on the stage. If students do not have a lock, one can be provisioned to them by coming to the office.

More information and FAQs on HWDSB’s Transforming Learning Everywhere can be found at TLE Education.  Questions on the vision can be directed through the Parent Contact tab.

Please reach out with questions via e-mail at [email protected] or [email protected].  We are always open to connecting on the playground for a conversation too!
