HOCKEY: Cinderella Saltfleet shocks Sherwood to capture division-I boys hockey title
The No. 4 ranked Saltfleet Storm earned a 4-1 win over the Sherwood Saints to claim the 2016-17 Hamilton public school boys division-I hockey championship on Wednesday, March 2 at Mountain Arena.
Ty McCullough netted two goals to help propel Saltfleet to its third title in four seasons. McCullough and Aiden Isowa scored goals in the first period with McCullough and Dawson McKinney registering goals in the second period to round out the scoring.
Nick Milanovich had two helpers in the game assisting on Isowa lone goal and McCullough’s second.
The Storm has now moved on to represent Hamilton at the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) championship held Tuesday, March 7th at Mohawk 4 Pad Arena. The SOSSA semifinal goes at 9:00am with the final set for 2:00pm.
Sherwood still has an opportunity to qualify for SOSSA as they will play Waterdown in a challenge game. That game will be played tomorrow (March 2) at Chedoke Twin Pad Arena. Puck drop is set for 2:30pm.
Saltfleet has been a tale of two teams this year having a 3-5 record in regular season play which pitted them as the fourth ranked team in the league. In the playoffs, with their backs against the wall, they rebounded earning a 3-0 against Dundas Valley in the play-in game. From there they took down No. 2 ranked Waterdown 2-0 in a best-of-three series (2-1 OT and 2-1 game scores) and then disposed of No. 1 Sherwood today.
For Sherwood, this was a heartbreaker coming in as the favoured No. 1 seed with the league’s top ranked offence. The Saints also have played in the last five championship games walking away with just a single victory in those games (2011-12).
