Roxborough Park - Literacy In September, Roxborough Park School will be kicking off an At Home Reading Program. Home reading is an important part in the process of learning to read. The more children read, the better readers they will likely become. It is very important for parents to support literacy learning at home by listening to and discussing books your child reads on a nightly basis. This support assists your child to develop and practice reading skills and strategies your child learns at school. At Roxborough Park, we believe that the home and school link is an important piece in developing strong readers. SK and JK students will be participating when they are comfortable with the school routines. Grade 1 and 2 Students Students in grade 1 and 2 will be bring home a book every day, at their level and will need to read it to an adult. They will then record the title of the book, author and check off how easy the book was and who they read it to. Early readers benefit greatly from reading aloud to an adult and then talking about the story. It is expected that you as the parent spent 5 – 10 minutes reading with you child nightly. Reading the same book several times is very beneficial to your child and helps him/her to be better readers. It is very important to establish this routing as soon as possible. It is also very important you enjoy this time together and make it positive. Grade 3, 4, and 5 Students Students in grade 3 will be expected to read for 15 minutes nightly and then record the reading in their “At Home Reading” Journal and agenda. Students in grade 4 will be expected to read for 20 minutes nightly and then record the reading in their “At Home Reading” Journal and agenda. More information will be sent home at a later date. Kicking Off Home Reading The week of September 19, 2005, each class will have the opportunity to listen to a local storyteller and participate in the stories. It will be a very exciting and fun time for the children. It will serve as a reminder of the importance of reading and how reading can help us “Reach for the Stars” at Roxborough Park. Reading Draws Your child will be given a star shape to put on our School bulletin board in the front hall every time they read 10 books and a chance to win a book to take home. So watch for the shooting stars.
