November Newsletter

Welcome to November!!  October was another exciting month here at Ray Lewis School!  We had many exciting events for students to take part in.

Physical Education News:  Junior and Senior Volleyball seasons kicked off and early results show that our teams are competing very well.  Thanks to our staff who are coaching and for students, current and former, who are assisting with refereeing and score keeping duties!!  Thanks to a team effort, we installed some new wood strips in the gym to hang up all our Championship banners.  Take a look next time you are in the gym!

Student Council News:  Our Student Council, led by our senior students, continues to provide some fun opportunities for our students.  Our PJ and Pancake Fundraiser was really fun and students enjoyed their pancakes!  On Halloween, Student Council organized a dance that all students in grades 1-8 had the opportunity to take part in.  What a great way to GET ACTIVE and LEARN SOMETHING NEW, with line dancing being a focus of the event.  Student Council’s most recent activity is Fitness Fridays.  Student leaders are leading different games and activities at recess to help our students have an active recess.  Student Council also put $500 towards the painting of new line games and activities on our hardtop.  The painting got completed last weekend and students are already enjoying the fun games!

School Council Update:  Our School Council continues to meet every month to look at how they can support student achievement and parent engagement.  Currently, School Council is running their annual Poinsettia Fundraiser.  This is the last week for orders, so please send in your order, or order online to avoid disappointment!!  As always, all members of the community are invited to come to Council meetings.

Winter Weather:  It is that time of year, where we are starting to see colder temperatures.  Outdoor time is an important part of our students day and for them to be comfortable, please be sure to send your child to school ready for the weather.  The weather can change quickly, so being prepared with hats, mitts, etc. is very helpful and will avoid calls home!  Inclement weather can also affect transportation and school closures.  See our website for more information on weather and school cancellations.

Transportation:  Ray Lewis continues to be challenged with some late buses.  If you have not already done so, please register with HWSTS  to receive updates of changes to transportation.  Late bus notifications will also be posted on our school website.  Be prepared and have a plan in place with your child in the event of late buses!

Secure Schools: Your child may have mentioned that we are currently conducting our Secure School and Fire Safety Drills, to prepare us in the event of emergency.  Schools must conduct 6 Fire Drills, 2 Lockdown Drills, 1 Hold and Secure, 1 Shelter in Place and 1 Bomb Threat Drill during the course of the school year.  Announcements are made prior to Secure School drills notifying students of the upcoming drill, and teachers review their responsibilities with them ahead of time.  We try to complete at least on drill per month.

Remembrance Day:  As Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday this year, we will be holding our assembly on Friday, November 10th.  At that time, all staff and students will take time to reflect and remember.  Please send in Poppy Money on Friday, November 10th for collection.  All monies raised go towards Veteran Affairs.
