Family Studies Department
Family Studies at Parkside focuses on skills
that students can carry on throughout life. Here is an insight
to what is offered at Parkside.
In grade 9 Individuals and Family (HIF1O1) is
a sneak peak into what the rest of the program has to offer
while developing individual skills for developing a strong
sense of self and independence.
Food and Nutrition (HFN2O1) in grade 10 takes
us into the kitchens more, where we learn how to prepare healthy
meals, understanding of food options, timing of meal preparation
and what happens to our bodies as a result of our nutrition
choices.
Grade 11 introduces Fashion and Creative Expression
(HNC3O1) teaches students how to chose appropriate clothing,
an understanding of how clothes affect us, the influences
of the fashion industry on society and how to sew.
The Parenting (HPC3O1) course is offered in
grade 11 and provides a learning environment for students
to develop an insight to parenting and the needs of children.
The students have an opportunity to take home a practice child
that will enlighten the teenager on what is really involved
on parenting a young child.
Individuals and Families in a Diverse Society (HHS4M1) is
a sociology course that digs deeply into the relationships
and dynamics of family, both internally and within society.
There is a rich research project that teaches skills needed
for future educational experiences.
Grade 12 Food and Nutrition Sciences (HFA4M1)
takes food and nutrition to a deeper level. This is a scientific
analysis of how food affects the human body. There is also
an opportunity to prepare foods as we understand the nutritional
effects on the body.
