Girls' Rugby
Coach – Mr. Alan Woodhead
Girls’ Rugby got off the ground here at Parkside about
11 years ago when Mrs. Wilson introduced this wild and wacky
sport to the menu of extracurricular sports. Mr Woodhead,
a long time rugby player and enthusiast, took on the role
of “Head Coach” as a result as a chance encounter
during a Parent Teacher Interview 10 years ago.
Since then, the sport has grown in popularity in part because
of its unique appeal to athletes of all abilities. Anyone
who is not afraid to get dirty, and who is willing to play
in wind, snow, rain or blistering heat is suitable for this
challenging and exciting sport. Girls’ Rugby has gained
in support so much that an Interscholastic HWDSB League was
founded. In addition, this year a new Instructional Level
League was introduced to provide further opportunities for
more schools to catch “Rugby Fever”.
In the 2007 season, Parkside joined forces with Delta creating
a new team, D-Side, as part of the new Instructional League.
D-Side improved their skills to such a degree that they won
the Division 2 City Championships with a record of three wins
and one tie in the final tournament. Congratulations Girls.
