Athletics - Basketball
Background
Boys basketball has a rich history at Parkside. The school
is the last HWIAC school to have won an OFSAA championship
and the program has had several players compete successfully
in the CIS following their careers as Panthers. Basketball
teams at Parkside begin formal tryouts and practices in October
and play games from late November until late February or early
March. The junior team is open for all boys in Grade 9 or
10 with the senior team representing Parkside’s varsity
athletes. The junior and senior teams compete in HWIAC, SOSSA,
and in four or five exhibition tournaments each winter. Parkside
also offers a midget basketball program open to Grade 9 students
each spring
Practices
Each boys basketball team practices most days during the season
when games are not otherwise scheduled. Coaches emphasize
strong half-court defense and adherence to team rules and
concepts to achieve success. Players are encouraged to work
on aspects of their game and physical fitness in the off-season.
Coaches will provide work-outs in the fall and late spring
for students interested in improving various skills.
