The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Parental Involvement Committee (PIC) is committed to ongoing communication with our parents and community. Please check this page on a regular basis to find our more about how we can work together and how you can become involved.

The Parental Involvement Committee holds the following core beliefs:

• That parent engagement with the school is key to student achievement
• That every parent should feel welcome and empowered to participate at any of the different levels of involvement
• That barriers to involvement are acknowledged and addressed, at the Board, school and classroom level, and that every family’s unique needs, including social, economic, linguistic and cultural, must be recognized and respected,
• That parents are provided with knowledge and understanding to be partners in their child’s education. This will require a continual effort to improve the ways that parents can become and stay involved
• That a philosophy of trust be developed and supported through open, transparent dialogue and information sharing. This will build and reinforce collaborative relationships at each level to support student success
• That there is direct and open communication among parents, school personnel and Board personnel.

The PIC (Parental Involvement Committee) will:

• Provide advice to trustees and senior management regarding matters related to parental engagement.
• Raise common parental interests of concern to the Board.
• Provide a link between parents and trustees/senior staff.
• Provide support to schools and to the Board on ways to engage parents at the Board, school and classroom level, including support for school councils.
• Provide support for engagement that includes parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making and collaborating with the community.
• Work with PICs from other Boards.
• Provide a formal link to HWDSB committees with parental representation.
• Provide assistance and support to parents as they navigate the Board.
• Provide input to and evaluate the success of the HWDSB in consultation on policy, support for parent engagement, information transparency, communication responsiveness and school/parent engagement.

How to get involved

There are several ways to get involved in your child’s education.

• Volunteer to help with special events or school trips at your child’s school.
• Volunteer on your school council.
• Volunteer on your school’s Home and School Association.
• Help your children one-on-one with social issues such as bullying.
• Attend committee meetings to voice your opinions.
• Donate to the HWDSB Foundation or to other Board Programs.
