Hamilton, Ontario – January 26th, 2010: HWDSB’s newest schools in Binbrook, Waterdown and Winona as well as its addition to Waterdown District High School (WDHS) are closer to welcoming students for fall 2011 thanks to a recent decision by Trustees. The projects are part of a $45.6 million investment from the Ministry of Education and an additional $31.4 million from the Board to build in high growth areas.
Site plans have been submitted for approval for both the Waterdown and Winona projects, while the plans for Binbrook are expected to be submitted in spring 2010. The tender process for all projects will begin in April and run through September 2010.
“We’re thrilled to be moving forward in our commitment to build new schools in our growth communities,” says Chair Jessica Brennan. “We know our students will benefit from high quality, state-of-the-art facilities for years to come.”
The three elementary schools will be able to accommodate 650 students each as well as include fitness rooms, science labs, art rooms, double gyms and an abundance of light. At WDHS, the 763-seat addition will potentially include 30 classrooms, new gym, shop rooms plus a multi-purpose space that can be used for theatre arts and gym facilities. A community meeting will be held at WDHS on Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:00 p.m. to showcase the new plans for the high school.
“The leading-edge evidence is clear that school and facility conditions play an important role in student achievement. These new schools are just one way we’re ensuring achievement matters is a top priority at HWDSB,” says Director of Education John Malloy.
