It is with great sadness that HWDSB learned of the passing of former Lieutenant Governor Lincoln MacCauley Alexander. Alexander – or ‘Linc’ as he was known to many – was an inspiring figure in Hamilton history, whose accomplishments and presence also played an important role in local education.
“Lincoln Alexander was a great statesman, an inspiring role model for our students, and a pioneer as Canada’s first black Member of Parliament,” HWDSB Board Chair Tim Simmons said.
“At HWDSB, we are so grateful to have had him as a friend and a supporter for so long. Linc made a difference in our community and our country. He will be missed.”

1990 – New School Named Lincoln Alexander Elementary School
Lincoln M. Alexander School is a fantastic JK to Grade 6 school situated in a well-established community on the Mountain, south of the Linc and east of Upper Gage Avenue. The school was opened in 1990 and named after the Honorable Lincoln M. Alexander (affectionately known as Linc), who was present for the opening ceremony.
2007 – HWDSB Celebrates Lincoln Alexander Day
On behalf of Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board it is my pleasure to officially declare today, February 12, 2007, as Lincoln Alexander Day. From this moment onwards, every second Monday in February will be recognized by our Board as Lincoln Alexander Day. This is our way of honouring a local legend and a fine role model for all our students.
2008 – Celebrating Lincoln Alexander
There’s nothing like a hometown hero to show our kids that anything is possible. Students across Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board are reminded of that message as schools across the city celebrate Lincoln Alexander Day on February 11, 2008.
2012 – Lincoln Alexander School Celebrates Lincoln Alexander’s 90th Birthday
