Basketball: Sir Allan MacNab edges Saltfleet 44-43 in thriller for senior boys’ title

The Sir Allan MacNab Lions captured their second straight HWIAC senior boys division-I basketball championship knocking off the Saltfleet Storm with a 44-43 victory at McMaster University on Feb. 23.

Down by two points with 1.4 seconds remaining in the game, MacNab’s Omeechi Williams hit a dramatic three pointer to secure the Lions third city title in four seasons.

MacNab’s Thomasi Gilgeous Alexander posted 15 points while Tyler Guppy and Kris MacLean chipped in nine and eight points respectively in the win.  For Saltfleet, Cam McVeety had nine points with Andrew Bartlett recording eight and Terry Hill notching seven.

This was the fourth straight season Sir Allan MaNab has faced off against the Saltfleet in the city championship.

Both Sir Allan MacNab and Saltfleet head to the Southern Ontario Secondary School (SOSSA) senior boys ‘AAA’ championship slated for Monday, February 27 at MacNab.

Earlier, in the junior boys division-I final, Saltfleet defeated Sir Allan MacNab 68-58 to claim their first ever junior boys’ championship as part of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

Saltfleet used a dominate 17 point fourth quarter to pull away from MacNab who only mustered eight points in the final frame to seal the victory.

Marco Josipovic led the way for the Storm with 29 points while Daquin Stewart also broke double digits with 16.  Thomas Matsell had 13 in the win.  For MacNab Rahmir Rowley posted 16 points in the loss.

The Storm now advance to the SOSSA junior ‘AA’ championship slated for Wednesday, March 1 at Notre Dame College in Welland, Ont.

In Division-II play, George P. Vanier notched a convincing 58-28 win over Delta to claim the senior title.  Vanier was led by Philippe Niare who poured in a game high 36 points in the contest. Delta’s Austen Millben had 14 points while Austin Turner had 12 in the loss.

Delta collected the junior division-II title topping Hamilton District Christian 48-28  It marked Delta’s first junior boys basketball title since 1969. Delta’s Zach Chaddock led the way for the Red Raiders with 14 points while Carlos Quammie posted 12.  Stefan Stewart also had seven points in the win.

For Hamilton District Tavaugh Rose tallied nine points with teammate Dylan VanVeen recording seven.

SOSSA Bound

Six teams from will represent Hamilton at the various SOSSA basketball championships which will go Monday and Wednesday next week.  Here’s a look at teams moving forward:
