Lincoln Alexander Community December Updates

The last few months have certainly been busy! November was another great month here at Lincoln Alexander School with many exciting learning, extra- curricular and athletic opportunities for students to take part in.

Some of our highlights include:

Clubs, Sports Teams & Intramurals: Students really enjoyed participating in Craft Club, Dance Squad and Choir during Nutrition Breaks in November, along with Grade 1 & 2 games and handball intramurals in the gym. These fun opportunities will continue into December as well.

Congratulations to all of our student athletes who demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship both on and off the court. From Swim Team to Volleyball, our students continue to impress.

Many thanks to our dedicated staff for taking the time to provide our students with these valuable extra-curricular opportunities!

Family Movie Night: Thanks to School Council for organizing our Family Movie Night and Book Swap on November 27th. Council raised a little over $350 to support the purchase of home reading books and library resources. It was great to see so many families out for this fun community event!

This time of year brings lots of excitement and energy to the school. As we head towards the December Winter Break a few important reminders:

Cold Weather and Winter Dress:  Time spent outdoors is an integral part of the school day. There are great benefits when children experience fresh air, exercise and time spent outside. Outdoor play is also a break from the structure of the classroom.

During winter, it’s important that children come to school prepared for the cold. Students should wear boots, mittens/gloves and hats and it’s a good idea to pack extra mittens, socks, etc. in case they are needed. Students should also have an extra pair of indoor shoes to change into at school. Boots must be removed once students enter. Boots carry in snow and ice and cause floors to become wet and slippery when left on. Please help us avoid unnecessary injury by assuring that your child brings an extra pair of shoes to school. We appreciate your support in reinforcing appropriate dress with your children.

Principals can always use their judgment to decide whether to send students outside during Nutrition Breaks. However, HWDSB asks Principals to follow the City of Hamilton recommendation that individuals stay inside when the temperature is at or below minus 15 degrees Celsius. Questions or concerns regarding winter outdoor play should be directed to the school Principal.

Lincoln Alexander Food Drive:  Our annual Holiday Food Drive has begun and will run until Friday, December 21st, 2018. We are proud of our past accomplishments and would like to continue to support our local community during the holiday season.

We will be collecting non-perishable food items such as breakfast bars, applesauce, pudding cups, pasta, rice, juice boxes, baby food and canned goods.

Food items sent in will be donated to Neighbour to Neighbour for distribution. Thank you for your continued support!

Candy Grams:  The Grade 6 Candy Gram Team at Lincoln Alexander will be selling Candy Grams on December 18th – December 20th. Each Candy Gram is 50¢. Sending in our younger students with a list of names for their Candy Grams would be very helpful.

Last year we sold over 900 Candy Grams and donated over $500 to support McMaster Sick Kids. This year, our students have chosen to support The Make a Wish Foundation of Canada. We are accepting donations of candy canes for our Candy Gram program (regular sized ones) in order to make our donation to Make a Wish as large as possible. Any boxes you would like to donate can be dropped off at the office. All flavours are accepted!

Kindergarten Winter Joy Day:  All Kindergarten children are invited to bring a parent, special family member (Grandma, etc), or caregiver to school on Wednesday, December 19th from 1:20 pm – 2:20 pm. We are all looking forward to an afternoon of crafts, snacks and fun!

LINC Assembly and Holiday Sing Along: This year our Holiday Sing Along is taking place during our student celebration assembly on Friday, December 21st at 11:00 am. The school choir will also be performing during this assembly. All parents and caregivers are welcome to attend!

Spirit Day: On Friday, December 21st we are having our first school Spirit Day – students are welcome to wear their festive holiday sweater or red or green on that day, to help us celebrate the season!

School Council: Our next School Council Meeting is taking place on Thursday, January 31st at 6:00 pm in Lincoln Alexander’s Staff Room – all are welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!

On behalf of the staff of Lincoln Alexander School, happy holidays and all the best for the upcoming new year.
