MILD INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY

THE M.I.D. (MILD INTELLECTUAL DISORDER)

The MID class is a class of students who have been identified by an IPRC as pupils in need of special programming to achieve academic success. The class size is limited by Ministry mandate to 12 pupils. The MID class at Lawfield is housed in Room 102 in a classroom that is specially equipped to meet the needs of the program. The major thrusts of the program are Social and Lifeskills. The pupils are involved in numerous trips within the community. The trips augment the Science, Social Studies, Music, Drama and Physical Education components of the curriculum. Lifeskills components of the program include, but are not limited to the following:
Handling Money- Students operate the school store, stocking shelves, acting as store merchants by selling the goods, keeping track of inventory and preparing a bank statement for the principal's deposit at the end of the week. The profits raised by the store go into general school funds. The class also makes a novelty food item (i.e. pickle on a stick) available to the Lawfield student population one day a week.
Daily living skills: Cooking The students prepare a nutritious lunch once a week. Pupils plan the menu in consultation with the classroom teacher and Educational Assistant. Pupils shop at the neighbourhood grocery store for the ingredients needed for the meal. As a collaborative effort the students prepare, cook and clean up after the meal. The menu item ieach week is available to staff members at a nominal cost.
Crafts Pupils are involved in a variety of craft activities throughout the school year. These activities refine use of small muscles and train students in the use of various hand tools (i.e. hammars, screw drivers, saws). Raw materials used in crafts include wood, glass, clay, yarn, paper.
Academic Areas All academic areas of insturction are geared to the students' level and delivery methods are geared to meet with the pupils' learning styles.
