Janet Lee Student Named to Minister’s Student Advisory Council

Janet Lee student Deema Abdel Hafeez has been named to the 2018-19 Minister’s Student Advisory Council, to give input on education from a student point of view.

A Janet Lee elementary student has been named to the 2018-19 Minister’s Student Advisory Council, to give input on education from a student point of view.

The Ministry of Education selected Grade 7 student Deema Abdel Hafeez after receiving hundreds of applications for the 60 positions. Council members will serve for a one-year term, commencing in May 2018.

“We are thrilled that Deema was chosen to provide her thoughts and insights on the 2018-19 Minister’s Student Advisory Council,” Principal Julie Anderson said. “Her commitment to providing ideas and sharing her perspectives has made Janet Lee a better place and now she gets to work together with students across the province to make Ontario schools the best they can be. We couldn’t be more proud!”

Students who serve on MSAC will have an opportunity to meet twice during their one-year term. Additional opportunities are also available to interested students during the school year. The council may also form sub-committees on topics of interest to them and may be invited to participate in other student forums, events or conferences to discuss student-related issues.

The council also:

• Provides the ministry with ongoing student perspectives, recommendations and participates in consultations on the Ministry of Education’s policies and programs;
• Provides advice and feedback on the ministry’s student engagement activities; and,
• Joins a network of MSAC alumni and provides support for members of future councils.

“There were more than 400 applications this year, which made it difficult to select 60 students representing Ontario’s great cultural, social and geographic diversity,” Minister of Education Indira Naidoo-Harris wrote.
