Heidi Siwak a Winner in National, 21st-century Video ContestThe MindShare Learning Report – Canada’s Leading, Learning & Technology eMagazine – has named Dundas Central teacher Heidi Siwak among the winners of the fourth annual MindShare Learning 21st Century Classroom Video Challenge.

The contest is a testament to the digital learning revolution that is happening across the Canadian education landscape and beyond.  This year the contest had a record number of submissions and was the most competitive to date. Events to Inspire Students, CommunityExcitement is coming to Westmount Secondary School on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, when award-winning author Kathy Kacer leads the first-ever Junior Empowerment Conference. 

A winner of the Silver Birch, Red Maple, Hackmatack and Jewish Book Awards, Kacer is well known for her books Gabbi’s Dresser and To Hope and Back. She will help students age eight through 12 develop respect for oneself, the school community, the Hamilton community, the global community and the environment through literacy.

Somewhere between being an “eco-ninja,” the fastest man in Ancaster and playing Danny Zuko in Ancaster High’s production of Greece, Derek Hambly found time to coach or compete on seven different school sports teams.

And, on Monday night, the Grade 12 Ancaster High School student was honoured for it, when he won the Jeff Dickins Memorial Award at the B’nai Brith sports celebrity dinner.

Everybody knows the standard approach to teaching students about the First and Second World Wars.

It usually involves big maps of Europe with thick, coloured arrows showing troop movements. Then there are the textbook reading assignments about topics such as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Treaty of Versailles, and the rise of Hitler. For Mackenzie Meyer, heading to biotech class used to mean grabbing a pair of heavy textbooks, an oversized binder and a bundle of other school supplies.

But this year, the Grade 12 student has lightened her load through a unique pilot program aimed at bringing technology into the classroom.

Meyer and her Ancaster High classmates have been armed with iPads containing digital versions of their biology and chemistry textbooks as well as a cluster of other apps.
