International Day of Pink

April 10, 2019

Parents & Guardians,

On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, HWDSB students and staff will join to celebrate the International Day of Pink. This day was started in Nova Scotia in 2007 when two Grade 12 students saw a Grade 9 student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. Bullies harassed the boy and threatened to beat him up for wearing a pink shirt. Two Grade 12 students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, bought and distributed 50 pink shirts and encouraged peers to arrive to school wearing pink.

International Day of Pink reminds children that they can:

  • Be proud of who they are.
  • Play with any toy or play any sport or game.
  • Play with children of any gender.
  • Wear any colour and style of clothes or hair.
  • Be who they are and help others to do the same.
  • Stop name-calling and discrimination and make a difference.

At Highview School, students are asked to consider the above on a regular basis and wear something pink on Wednesday, April 10th if possible to support this day.

Thanks,
Mr. Pellizzari and Mr. McLean
