Message for
June
Here we are in June, on the one hand wishing that there were more months in the year to get everything done that we haven't and on the other hand, wishing for the last day of school to hurry up and release us into the idyllic days of summer! Dare I be clichιd and ask, "Where has the time gone?" and "Who are these grown-like-weeds children, who have gained so much height, maturity and knowledge since September?" As always, we at Greensville School are proud to have been helpers along the way in our students' accomplishments, but know that kudos go to the support and encouragement provided by the families of our students. Way to go!
Now we have a fresh crop of Grade 5 almost-grads, ready to launch into grown-up Grade 6s at Spencer Valley in the fall. We have watched them grow into responsible, reflective leaders and know that they will continue to blossom and grow as they approach adolescence. We wish them the best of luck and know they will be missed!
As the year begins to draw to a close, we are in the midst of planning for the 2010-2011 school year. We are building classes, finalizing staffing and the timetable, and looking over the School Improvement Plan through the lens of the District Review. Next year we will continue to make time for team planning and networking and will continue to plan in cycles using the Teaching and Learning Critical Pathway. We will continue to support our struggling learners through a tiered intervention approach with the support of programs provided by the Board. We will continue to scrutinize our school data and look for gaps and weaknesses, (i.e., the gender gap in achievement) and address them. We will continue to use Character Builds as a basis for character education in our school. These are all areas that the District Review highlighted as things that we already do well (i.e., they were seen in all areas of the school.) In addition, we will strive to create more challenging and engaging literacy learning environments that are inquiry based and developmentally appropriate for students that foster curiosity, perseverance and self-confidence in students, as well as being authentic, relevant and engaging. Reading and Writing tasks will give students the opportunity to explore meaningful concepts (the "big ideas") that go beyond discrete facts or skills and prepare them for the world of the future. We will ensure that student learning is represented and on display in every classroom and that students know where to go to determine what their next steps in learning are. These are the areas that the District Review determined we could improve upon (i.e., they were seen in only some areas of the school.) We are excited and determined as we face another school year.
Our staffing for next year is almost complete. We are down a primary class and up a junior class and our special class has been closed. We are thrilled to announce that we have hired Mrs. C. Salciccioli to fill the 1/2 vacancy. Mrs. Salciccioli is our Literacy Improvement Project Teacher this year and will bring lots of experience and expertise to the classroom. We are sad to be saying goodbye to Mrs. Hill, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Please see more about a celebration below. We are also sad to say good bye to Mr. Venema, our special class teacher, who is looking for another teaching assignment in the Board. We still have a 0.2 position to be filled.
