Parental Involvement at Greensville School
|
"When parents participate children do better in school, but more than that, they go to better schools"
|
|
- Dr. Peter Ross, Former Chair Education Quality and Accountability Office
|
At Greensville School, we are fortunate to have 2 very high functioning parent organizations:
School Council - the purpose of School Council is to help improve student achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents. (Regulation 612 of the Education Act)
The Home and School Association - the purpose of Home and School Association is to raise funds and decide on the use of these funds for the overall benefit of the students.
Greensville School is a true learning community. This may not be the norm of what you have heard or read of public education lately, but it is the standard at our school. Each year we lose critical parent voices as their children move on to middle school. Our cycle of success depends on new parent volunteers. We all lead hectic lives but our close to 250 students need our time, input, ideas and enthusiasm. We have sound leadership, a motivated staff and an engaged pool of parent volunteers. These things are not accidents, but a result of a deliberate focus.
What can "parental involvement" mean for you? There are many areas of school life that need parents and parent volunteers:
- Support your children by being engaged parents. Monitor homework and academic progress. Dialogue with the principal, teachers and parent representatives. Give your children the voice they cannot yet use for themselves.
- Volunteer in the school community. Parents are welcome to help out in the library, resource room, front office, lunchtime milk distribution, pizza and hot dog days, field trips, and web-site maintenance. Parent involvement is a significant predictor of student success: those parents who are involved in some ways are more likely to have children who perform better in school. Honest!
- Volunteer in the classroom. Support learning in the classroom, become a classroom volunteer.
- Become a School Improvement Plan (SIP) committee member. Any parent from the school community can join any of the 4 committees, which are comprised of staff and parents. They are: Budget, School Environment, Parent Involvement and Curriculum. Contact our principal if you are interested in knowing more about the excellent work of these committees.
- Join the Greensville Chapter of the Home and School Association. The H&S consists of 20 chapters in the Hamilton region and over 150 chapters in Ontario. This group of volunteers focuses supporting the best for every child at the school via policy discussions and critical local fundraising ventures. First meeting of the 2008-2009 school year will be Tuesday, September 30th 7:00pm in the staff room. All are welcome to attend.
- Join the Greensville School Council. Each school board is expected to have a school council at each and every school. This group has a mandated responsibility in the Education Act of Ontario. School Councils are a school based think tank composed of parents in majority, a teacher representative, a Home and School representative and the principal. The dialogue at the council table focuses on academic excellence and what is required and needed to meet that objective. Please consider becoming an important link between our school and our community. The School Council self-nomination forms are due back to the school by Friday September 12, 2008. Our first meeting will then take place on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:30 pm in the staff room. We will resume our regular schedule of meetings in October, being the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 6:30 pm.
As you can see, there are many opportunities at Greensville School to help make your children lifelong learners and contributing citizens in a challenging, changing multi-cultural world. What better way to get to know the school principal, staff and other parents in the community? Contact the school, Diane, Sasha, or Carla if you are interested in any of these school community services.
On behalf of all the parent volunteers at Greensville School, we welcome you!
Hope to see you soon,
