Character Builds at George R. Allan Character Builds and Supporting Student Achievement There are many ways that character development supports academic achievement. It develops the whole student - the cognitive, affective and behavioural domains, and as an individual learner and engaged citizen. Character education involves the teaching of children in a manner that will help them develop as personal and social beings. Character Education programming includes social and emotional learning, moral reasoning/cognitive development, life skills education, health education, violence prevention, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and conflict resolution and mediation. This form of education involves teaching children and adolescents’ values including caring, citizenship, empathy, courage, acceptance, honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, and trustworthiness. Our goal is to assist our students in developing into ethical, morally responsible, community-oriented, self-disciplined adults. The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board's Character Builds initiative helps students become responsible members of society.  The Character Builds program and philosophy is practiced and modeled by the parents, staff, and student of George R. Allan. Character Education Builds: Caring We demonstrate a genuine willingness to reach out and help, support and protect others. Citizenship We have rights and privileges to be responsible and active members in our community. Empathy We understand issues from the perspective of others even though we may not agree with them personally. Courage We have strength to take on challenges to do the right thing even when it may be unpopular. Acceptance We interact with others without bias, prejudice or discrimination. We stand up for human rights. Honesty We are sincere, trustworthy and truthful. Integrity We are truthful and sincere. What we say matches what we do. Respect We treat others and ourselves with courtesy, dignity and positive regard. We honour the rights of others and ourselves. We respect belongings, the environment and the world around us. Responsibility We can be trusted and follow through on all our commitments. We are accountable for all we say and do. Trustworthiness We are reliable, honest and can be depended upon in any situation, under any circumstances.
