Mad About Mechanisms

Welcome to our Web site about Structures and Mechanisms! We have been using K'Nex and Lego kits to learn how to build different machines and structures that use pulley systems, inclined planes, gear systems, wheels and axles, and levers.

We brought in objects from home that are made from simple machines.

Did you know that a can opener is made with gears?

Did you know that a spinning top is really a fancy wheel and axle?

Did you know that the ramp on a moving truck is really an inclined plane?

Did you know that a pair of scissors is really two levers held together with a pin in the middle?

It was cool to find out more about how these everyday objects are made.

In our next four pages, we will share pictures and reflections of our work building from instructions and working in partners or groups of three. We spent a lot of time exploring and talking about how structures were put together and why they worked the way they do.

For our final challenge, we couldn't use any K'Nex or Lego pieces, but we had to plan, design, and build our own structure using things like paper towel rolls, string, paper cups, and tissue boxes. That was a challenge!
