French Immersion Information Sessions

French Immersion is a proven way of acquiring excellent language skills in French. The French Immersion program at HWDSB is specifically designed for parents who do not speak French, but want their children to speak both official languages. The program is open to all students in Hamilton-Wentworth starting in Grade 1. The following information sessions are planned for parents considering French Immersion as an option for their child:

Information Session for A.M. Cunningham, Glen Echo and Michaelle Jean parents
7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 12 at Glen Echo (140 Glen Echo Dr., Hamilton)

Information Session for Norwood Park and Lawfield parents
7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 19 at Lawfield (45 Berko Ave., Hamilton)

Information Session for Earl Kitchener and Cootes Paradise parents
7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 24 at Earl Kitchener (300 Dundurn St. S., Hamilton)

Information Session for Dundana, Guy Brown, Fessenden and new Flamborough location (Sept. 2017) parents
7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 31 at Dundana (23 Dundana Ave., Dundas)

Parents may choose to attend the location or date most convenient for them.

Parents/Guardians should begin registering their child in February at their in-catchment French Immersion school, to ensure they receive a spot in the school’s French Immersion class

FIAC is advisory in nature with a focus on FI program in elementary and secondary as well as Ministry and community supports that enhance the learning experience for our students.

Resources and information for parents, with students in French Immersion, are available through Canadian Parents for French Hamilton chapter.

Transportation for French Immersion is offered to students whose in catchment school exceeds the walking distances of:

Elementary School Grades 1-8 1.6 kms

The method of transportation for elementary French Immersion is:

Grade 1 to 6 – Black and Yellow Buses with community stops.
A community stop is a centrally-located stop for students and may not be within walking distance of a student’s home. Community stops may change year to year based on the home addresses of students.

Grade 7 and 8 – HSR (unless there is an existing route that accommodates these students)

Where HSR is not available, alternative transportation will be provided.
