Welcome

In the 2013-14 school year, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) continued to embrace district-wide changes to make every school a great school for our students. We did this in the context of our strategic directions: Achievement Matters, Engagement Matters and Equity Matters. Below, you will see how – within each pillar – the work we have done to achieve our goals and how we will continue to prepare students for success through engaging learning environments infused with equity.

OUR VISION

All Students Achieving Their Full Potential

OUR MISSION

Providing relevant, responsive education so that each student becomes a lifelong learner and contributing citizen in a diverse world.

OUR VALUES

Respect, Creativity, Excellence, Citizenship

Achievement Matters

When students achieve, they move toward a pathway that they have chosen. HWDSB strives to see elementary students transition successfully to secondary school; a secondary student enter an apprenticeship, college, classsizecommunity living, university or the workplace; adults finishing high school so they can pursue personal and professional goals. Each student’s needs are unique, so we use tiered programs and supports, as we ask: ‘What do all students need? What do some students need? And what do a few students need?’

Engagement Matters

To foster engagement, HWDSB works hard to strengthen positive relationships that connect our students, parents, community members and staff. There are many different ways that we pursue this, with the understanding that languagesstudent achievement improves when everyone feels a shared sense of belonging in our schools and communities.

Equity Matters

Equity is a thread running through all that we do, but it is also a very complex pursuit. It is so far-reaching that it often requires shifts in practice, thinking and culture at every level of our organization. Equity also matters in our daily work, as include all voices in our decisions, make all students and staff feel welcome and meet student and community needs in equitable ways.
