As you will see within this report, our Strategic Directions of Achievement Matters, Engagement Matters and Equity Matters, which we established in 2010, inform all our decisions and help our students succeed.
Student Achievement and success is our top priority. As a school board, we want all of our students to be successful in whichever path they choose, whether it is apprenticeship, college, community, university, or work.
The Board of Trustees is committed to be fully engaged with our staff, our parents and our community. Hearing the thoughts and opinions of our partners is what helps us to make better decisions.
HWDSB strongly believes in equality when it comes to the success of our students and this influences our decisions. Equity is not just about the distribution of our resources, but also about who is included. We continue to look at who are we missing in the decision-making process and at ways to ensure that we hear their voices. We appreciate and value the diversity of our students, staff and community.
Achieving our Strategic Directions and meeting the needs of students would not be possible without the continued support of parents, guardians, caregivers and the community.
It is this support that allows us to have our students not only graduate with an awareness of their potential, but also with the tools to make their dreams come true.
As Trustees, we have the opportunity to see and hear how successful our students are. Whether it is their wonderful achievements in: obtaining scholarships; athletics; the arts; or community service, I continue to be amazed by, and proud of, the students we have at HWDSB.
The 2012-13 school year was an exciting one at Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), as we embraced district-wide changes that will make every school a great school for our students. All of our work, including our secondary revitalization, is supported by the three core pillars of our strategic directions: Achievement Matters, Engagement Matters and Equity Matters.
This report will detail how, within each pillar, we are preparing our students for success, creating engaging learning environments and ensuring equity touches every aspect of our mission.
In 2012-13, we continued our focus on several major areas: our pre-K to Grade 2 oral language and literacy strategy, full-day kindergarten, our data mobilization strategy, our secondary program strategy and facilities master plan, our mental health strategy, 21st-century fluencies as well as the Ontario Leadership Framework.
Knowing our students, staff, parents and communities continued to be a priority, so that we could understand their strengths and their needs. Only by doing this, and responding in effective ways, will we truly support our students.
We have a lot to celebrate in HWDSB because we are making great things happen. And we believe that our students will achieve their full potential because of the exemplary efforts by our staff, students, parents and community.
