Beginning my first year as Chair, I am proud to serve the students at Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
Trustees have an important role at HWDSB, as we strive to maintain open communication with the public, to engage in joint decision-making and always make the best informed decisions that will benefit our students and the community.
We are fortunate at HWDSB to have a clear set of Strategic Directions that are guiding us toward a place where achievement, engagement and equity matter,
We are making consistent progress on student achievement, and it is always exciting to see our students excel in the classroom, the sports field, through community service and in the arts.
Staff are working hard to know our students, and we know every student is unique. This is why the following report covers so much ground. We are striving to support our vulnerable students, we are embracing diversity, we are re-engaging students who may leave us before graduation, and we are offering top-quality programming the feeds every student’s interests and style of learning.
As trustees, we hear first-hand when our students benefit from leadership opportunities, when they see progress in their learning, when more and more of our youngest learners are reading by Grade 3, and when we are providing adults with the tools they need to graduate and take their next steps in a knowledge-based economy.
Of course, we also know that we are never doing this alone.
We depend on teamwork in the boardroom as well as among our talented staff, supportive parents and all our community partners working in areas such as child care, social services, health, nutrition, after school programs and more.
Our schools are becoming more welcome, inclusive and focused places where student achievement is job one.
It’s important to celebrate our great work – as we will do in the pages that follow. But we also know that much more work remains.
Thanks for us letting us share this story.
