Satellites

Canada is well know for it's part in the satellite designing process. Satellites help us and the world with telecommunications. Satellites are put in space via the space shuttle and the Canadian arm. The RADARSAT satellite cost 640 million dollars. In Canada we have our own Satellite program called RADARSAT. The U.S. owns a world known satellite called the Hubble Space Telescope. You may think that all satellites are man made, but the moon is also a satellite.

RADARSAT is an advanced Earth observation satellite project developed by Canada. Monitoring environmental change and to support resource sustainability. With RADARSAT's launch on Nov. 4, 1995, Canada and the world now have access to the first radar satellite system capable of large scale production and timely delivery of data. This data is meeting the needs of commercial, government and scientific programs and provides a new source of reliable and cost-effective data for environmental and resource professionals worldwide. The RADARSAT project, led by the Canadian Space Agency, builds on the history of achievements in remote sensing and space technologies by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS), part of Natural Resources Canada. With its creation in 1989, the Canadian Space Agency took over the implementation and operation of the RADARSAT project as a key component of the Canadian space program. CCRS continues to participate in the RADARSAT project through the Radar Data Development Program (RDDP) and is responsible for data collection and archiving.

The three pictures below are pictures of satellites flying in space. The first satellite is the first RADARSAT satellite. The second is a rendering of a satellite that is yet to be built. This third photo is a satellite orbiting a planet.

These are some uses for a satellites:

  • Weather
  • G.P.S.
  • Photographs
  • Military Support

Here are some of our Weather links that can be used to check the Canadian weather.
