Literature with Positive
Role Models for Boys at the Intermediate Level.
In
"Modelled Reading” someone reads a story, book
of fiction, news article, picture book, essay, poem, or
trades a book to another person.
Children
usually ask questions about the Modelled Reading selection,
and these questions lead to explanations, making connections
and questions by the reader, informal discussion skills
are indirectly developed through Modelled activities.
During
an interactive modeled-reading the teacher engages in a
series of activities, including: pre-viewing the book; asking
students to make predictions and connections to prior knowledge;
stopping at purposeful moments to emphasize story elements,
ask guiding questions or focus questions; and using oral
or written response to bring closure to the selection.

text read over period of days Teacher
Introduces book (vocabulary, style etc.) It
focuses on meaning, fun, enjoyment and sequence of story
(encourage to relate to own experiences) Make
predictions Spontaneous
participation (choral, drama, masking activities etc)
Groups
with approximately 3-5 students have been created by the teacher.
Texts
will be carefully selected at the students’ instructional
level using a variety of text forms and genres (e.g., fiction,
non-fiction, and media). The teacher uses multiple copies
of the same text.
Before
the reading, the teacher introduces the book, activates prior
knowledge, draws attention to text features and key vocabulary
Students
read the whole text or portions to themselves. Teacher may
move around and ask a student to make their reading audible
as reading continues.
The
teacher listens, and observes the reader and records the reading
behaviours, supports the student’s attempts, records
the needs for instruction and provides teaching ‘points’
as appropriate
After
the reading, the students discuss the teaching point to check
for understanding, reread the text for support, and engage
in responding to the text through a variety of grade appropriate
activities
What is Independent Reading? Click
here
for details.
Independent
Reading is a time when students self-select and independently
read appropriate books.
Independent
Reading provides an opportunity to apply strategies that are
introduced and taught during teacher modeled reading, shared
reading, and guided reading.
The
self-selection process of Independent Reading places the responsibility
for choosing books in the hands of the student
While
students are free to choose what they like, they must be encouraged
to select a variety of literature and to select materials
at their independent reading level. Independent means 95%
to 100% accuracy as defined by running records. These materials
should be able to be read without teacher support. It is at
the independent level that comprehension, vocabulary extension,
and fluency are improved.
