PARENT/GUARDIAN LITERACY TIPS FOR PRIMARY STUDENTS

1. Daily Conversation with your Children

• asking your children questions about their day, their experiences, how they are feeling
• listen, listen, listen...always take time to listen to questions your child has and ideas they have
• role playing conversations when playing with toys

2. Daily Reading

• with different stories, children’s magazines, the children’s section of the newspaper, children’s websites
• have your child read to you
• your child can go on a word/letter hunt through a book to find words/letter he/she already knows
• during the reading and after reading is done be sure to ask questions
(e.g. What do you think might happen next?; Why do you think that character feels that way?)

3. Play

• use magnetic letters on a cookie sheet to build your child’s name and other words
• paint with water on the driveway or sidewalk to make names and words
• make letters and words with Play-doh
• create a grocery list together
• colour with crayons, pencil crayons, markers, to build fine motor skills which will lead to stronger hands that will be better prepared for printing
